While we wait for crocuses and snowdrops to appear, other treasures are popping up in the cottage garden like this pot fragment. Mrs Smith didn't have a collected dustbin until 1973, so broken items like these would be disposed of in the garden. Do you recognise the pattern on this piece?

Do you still keep a pantry in your home? Mrs Smith never had a fridge so used hers to keep food cool throughout her life. Though she was an early adopter of electricity, having 4 electric lights installed in 1936, she was very particular about which 'mod cons' were important to her.

The cottage will be closed today due to the snow (but doesn’t it look lovely!). In January of 1968 Mrs Smith writes in her diary “No milk, no post, no papers, snowed up”.

This Friday 10th! Our NavenBees Toddler Group is back. Running throughout 2025, on the second and fourth Friday every month 11am - 12 noon. At our next session we'll be learning and playing with the warm cozy clothes we need for this wintry weather. £2 per child, adults free, no need to book.

We were visited yesterday by the Graffoe Parish Ch

We were visited yesterday by the Graffoe Parish Churches posada. The word ‘posada’ means inn or lodging, and is a Mexican tradition where these figures of Mary and Joseph travel around as they search for a place to stay for Jesus’ birth. We’re so glad to have hosted them and are sure Mrs Smith would be very pleased.

Here's what's coming up this Christmas at Mrs Smith's Cottage! The cottage will be decorated from the 22nd (for the Christmas Light Switch On), until twelfth night.
Don't forget that we now open all year round Fridays, Saturdays, Sundays, and Mondays 12-4 (last entry 3pm) and the cottage feels especially cozy at this time of year.

[Please note that due to high expected visitor numbers the cottage itself won't be open during the switch on & market, but find lots to see in our Visitor Centre and Learning Centre]
